The Editor’s Arsenal (MMM#59)
Greetings all,
Madeline here with the first movie minute of October. Today, we’ll be digging into the editor’s arsenal of gear!
An efficient editor must have the right gear if they want to edit high-quality footage into a powerful story. There are a wide variety of pre-built PCs such as Mac Studio and Asus ProArt, but many editors might also have a custom-built setup. What’s important is that the PC has an adequate CPU, RAM, GPU, and cooling system among other things to make it capable of handling and processing high-resolution footage and effects efficiently without overheating.

But it’s not just the internal PC components itself that matter- it’s also vital to have a high quality monitor with color accuracy for observing footage, drives for transferring and holding data, UPS for protection against power surges and outages, headphones to monitor sound, and ergonomic keyboards and mice to allow the editor to comfortably work (especially since we don’t want to develop carpel tunnel!!)

Software is also crucial to being an efficient editor. Most importantly, a high-quality NLE program, like Adobe Premiere or Avid Media Composer, is a must when editing films together. Although there are others such as CapCut and Final Cut Pro that can be useful for certain projects, the two previously mentioned are the most common within Hollywood and indie filmmaking. DaVinci Resolve is also another popular NLE (with a free version!), but is more commonly used for its color grading features rather than full-on editing.

Overall, having the right gear and software is a critical part of being an editor that will make things much easier. While the exact arsenal can vary depending on the project (shorts, features, narratives, documentaries, social media, etc.), many of the same principles apply across all kinds of projects. And in the long run, having the right tools will make you powerful and efficient in cutting impactful stories for the world to see.
And that concludes this entry in The Movie Minute. Wishing you all the best, and see y’all in 2! -Madeline
