How Media Encoder Makes Things Easier (MMM#44)

Madeline here, back with the first Movie Minute for March. For this entry, we’ll be focusing on one of our most powerful tools for the projects we produce- Adobe Media Encoder.
When we finish a cut of our projects, we have to export it into a format that can be played easily- usually an MP4. Whether it’s a rough cut for reviewing on frame.io or a final deliverable to be delivered on Google Drive or presented on Vimeo or YouTube, the process remains the same. And while our go-to NLE, Adobe Premiere, can export video on its own, it’s not as efficient as Media Encoder, which allows more focused exporting in batches. The program can also be used as a way to transcode video files to other formats as well, with a variety of presets for both exporting and transcoding depending on delivery specifications.

As our work requires exporting video files on a regular basis, Media Encoder has been a life and sanity saver for me. Reels are a prime example of this as I can utilize the same preset (such as Match Source – High Bitrate for final delivery or 1080p for draft reviews) to export multiple video files without having to send them one-by-one. Since exports can take time depending on TRT and quality, it also allows me to take care of other things without having to constantly babysit my computer. In addition, it makes more efficient use of my PC’s dedicated GPU, as it allows Premiere’s functionality to remain accessible without being disabled.

While it works most of the time, there are times that Media Encoder isn’t perfect. Occasionally, there have been times where exports have failed- and it makes an obnoxious bleating goat sound when that happens! Sometimes just restarting the export can make it work again, while other times may require some tweaking (usually there’s a description that is generated for each error).
To wrap things up, Media Encoder is a simple yet powerful tool that is crucial to our editing workflow. Rather than just sitting around and waiting for exports or transcodes to finish, it allows us to keep moving forward with our work and ensuring high quality and cinematic stories of the organizations we work with can be told powerfully and efficiently (provided no annoying goat sounds).
