Project Spotlight: Gold Star Family Picnic (MMM#54)
Hey everyone,
Madeline here, hope all is well. For this entry in The Movie Minute, we’ll be doing another project spotlight on one of our recurring projects- the Gold Star Family Picnic.
Organized by Legacies Alive, this annual event that occurs every 4th of July weekend serves as a way to bring Gold Star families together from all over the country and preserve the legacies of their fallen heroes. We at Poor Bear Stories have been covering this event for several years, and we were excited to continue to do so in 2026!

It all starts when we fly up from the south to Pittsburgh, where the Gold Star Riders escort us to our hotel up in Beaver Falls. Usually before the day of the picnic, we’re given the opportunity to grab some dinner and say hello to fellow Gold Star family members, multiple of whom we’ve known for years. On the day of the picnic, we ensure that we’re ready to cover a variety of events and highlights- opening speeches and prayers, food, a family softball game, kids’ activities, and many more- and we finish it off with some fireworks!

As Gold Star and military children ourselves, we’re honored to cover and participate in this event every year. But we’re not just grabbing b-roll and cool footage of the event- we also interview volunteers and Gold Star family members as we want to share their stories about their heroes and how the event has impacted them- important and crucial for our upcoming highlight video which we can’t wait to share when it’s ready. Alongside the Mountain Man Memorial March and Army-Navy Game, the Gold Star Family Picnic is one of our most important events that we cover for Legacies Alive, and we couldn’t be prouder to continue to tell the stories of the organization, the families that it supports, and their loved ones that made the ultimate sacrifice to serve our country.

And that concludes this entry in The Movie Minute. Wishing you all the best, and see y’all in 2! -Madeline
