Why Less Can Be more (MMM#50)

Why Less Can Be more (MMM#50)

Hello everyone,

Madeline here, and welcome to the 50TH Movie Minute! For this entry, we’ll be exploring why focusing on a certain audience as opposed to mass appeal can sometimes be beneficial.

While it is true that blockbuster movies and franchises have the potential to bring in wide audiences and attention, that doesn’t always translate into success. Many films, despite attempts, have flopped at the box office, especially since turning a profit requires not only breaking even with the budget but surpassing marketing and distribution costs as well. But even with smaller projects, getting enough revenue to turn a profit can be difficult. This is especially true due to smaller films being pushed to streaming platforms while theatres and audiences favor films with mass appeal and franchises, even more so since the pandemic.

Here at Poor Bear Stories, we used to aim to get as many clients as possible across different fields. Over the years, however, we realized that a better way to continue to be able to tell amazing stories is to focus on communities that we serve best- defense, intelligence, Gold Star family, and a variety of other organizations that focus on serving our community and our country. These include impactful nonprofits such as the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and Legacies Alive, as well as businesses like ClearanceJobs. Focusing on the clients we connect with most as opposed to chasing all different kinds of them has allowed us to stress less about outcomes and hone our strengths into powerful and impactful stories.

Overall, going big is not always the right choice when it comes to filmmaking. While film is a business, it is also an art- quality can often be far more paramount than quantity, and while it is important to maintain an adequate size of audience or clients, avoiding overgrowth can be beneficial in the long run, both from a business and an artistic perspective.

And that concludes this entry in The Movie Minute. Wishing you all the best, and see y’all in 2! -Madeline
